From Refugee to Technology Leader: Building AI That Opens Doors

    Shirin Alipanah

I've spent my career proving that the most powerful innovations come from those who've been told "no." Whether it was being expelled from school in Iran for wearing white socks, immigrating with nothing, or breaking into male-dominated industries, every barrier taught me the same lesson: systems can be rebuilt. Access can be created. Technology should serve everyone, not just the few.

Today, I lead NUIX Consulting, advise Fortune 500 companies on AI transformation, deliver keynotes worldwide, and serve communities that remind me why this work matters. This is my story, and why I believe the future belongs to those who build with both innovation and inclusion.

When They Said I Had No Future

I grew up in Iran with 9 siblings, 7 of them brothers. In many ways, I had 8 fathers, each shaping how I saw the world. But I also grew up under a system designed to limit me. Simple acts like wearing white socks to school got me expelled. Bigger dreams, like attending university, were blocked before I could even try.

At 18, I made a choice: I fled Iran for Canada with nothing but the belief that education could change a life.

Starting over wasn't easy. I put myself through school, learned a new culture, built a career in technology from the ground up. In 2008, I moved to the United States, and what began as survival became a mission: to ensure no one's potential is capped by their circumstances.

    Building Systems That Scale Impact

Over 20 years, I've led digital transformation and AI implementation across industries that most people wouldn't connect. That's exactly the point.

As Technology Partner to Meta, leading AI activation and enablement for Meta's global HR organization, I worked where cutting-edge technology meets real-world implementation. At Avasant, I advised Fortune 500 companies on technology strategy and operational excellence.

Before that, I led enterprise-wide technology programs at Jack in the Box and spent seven years at Bumble Bee Foods as Director and Senior Director of Program Management and Enterprise Analytics, driving multi-year transformation initiatives that modernized how an entire organization operated and made decisions.

Every role reinforced the same conviction: the best technology amplifies people. It doesn't replace them. That principle now drives everything I build.

    NUIX Consulting

In 2023, I founded NUIX Consulting (Nexus of Unified Innovation & eXcellence) to help traditional industries adopt AI without losing their soul. We work with organizations that want to innovate responsibly, maximizing efficiency while strengthening community ties, employee engagement, and customer loyalty.

    Keynote Speaking

I deliver keynotes at conferences, corporate events, and summits worldwide on AI transformation, resilience leadership, and industry innovation. My talks challenge audiences to rethink what's possible when technology serves humanity first.

    Investing in the Next Generation

YMCA of Escondido - Board Member

I serve on the board because I believe children don't succeed on talent alone. They succeed when someone invests in them early.

YoungPreneurs Program - Founder & Lead

I created and lead YoungPreneurs, a youth education initiative focused on entrepreneurship, leadership, and financial literacy. For many kids, it's the first time they see themselves as capable of building something, and that shift changes everything.

I was given opportunity when I had nothing. People believed in me before I had it all figured out. Now I'm building systems to ensure opportunity isn't based on luck or circumstance. It's intentionally created for the next generation.

    A Mother. A Builder. A Fighter.

I'm a single mother to my son, Artin, my greatest teacher and my biggest inspiration. Every system I build, every stage I step onto, every organization I advise, I do it thinking about the world he'll inherit.

Being a mother while leading in technology and business has taught me what resilience really means. It's shown me that you can honor tradition while pioneering change. And it's reminded me daily that the future we're building isn't abstract. It's for our children.

    What Drives Me:

I came to this country with nothing. I built a career in industries that weren't built for people like me. And now I use every platform I have to make sure the next generation doesn't have to fight as hard as I did, but has the tools to fight when it matters.
